2015 Healthcare Professional Award—Beverly Friedlander Ostrowski, VITAS Healthcare

Beverly Friedlander Ostrowski, VITAS Healthcare

With a background of servant leadership in the Presbyterian Church, Reverend Ostrowski began a Clinical Pastoral Education Residency at Gwinnett Medical Center. She served chaplaincy rotations in Emergency/Trauma, General Surgery, ICU, Neonatal ICU, Neurology ICU, Oncology and at the Women’s Pavilion. Her longest rotation was in the Behavioral and Mental Health Department, where she created and facilitated spiritual

growth courses to complement relapse prevention and wellness programs. For more than seven years, Beverly specialized in Interim Ministry, serving churches in temporary capacities honing her skills in administration, development, planning, preaching, strategic foresight and teaching. In these positions, and beyond the pastoral care offered to individuals, she further recognized the critical role that loss and a healthy response to sorrow plays and became a chaplain for VITAS Healthcare.

In her current position as Bereavement Services Manager with VITAS, Reverend Ostrowski serves as the community chaplain and oversees all the caregiver and grief support provided by the hospice staff. As a Certified CEU Presenter, her seminars successfully introduce participants to new ways to care for themselves and others with non-clinical topics such as: Communicating Bad News, Coping with Grief, Taking Care of Me and Reducing Hospital Readmissions. Most recently, she facilitated an outreach seminar in conjunction with a local police department to educate area Latino clergy about Alzheimer’s.
